India’s political landscape just shifted dramatically. The Election Commission’s announcement today has triggered the Model Code of Conduct across five states, effectively freezing new government schemes and announcements in those regions. Here is the full political breakdown of what this means, who benefits, and what the next 50 days of Indian politics will look like.

🗳️ Full Election 2026 Schedule
State/UT Vote Date Result Ruling Party
Assam April 9 May 4 BJP (defending)
Kerala April 9 May 4 CPI(M)/LDF (defending)
Tamil Nadu April 23 May 4 DMK (defending)

Kerala: CPI(M) Fields 56 Sitting MLAs Including CM Vijayan

The CPI(M) has announced its full candidate list for the Kerala Assembly elections. CM Pinarayi Vijayan will contest from his traditional seat. The LDF has fielded 56 sitting MLAs, signalling confidence in incumbency. Congress leader K. Muraleedharan expressed confidence the UDF would win 100+ seats to regain power.

Bengal: 2-Phase Poll — Why?

CEC Gyanesh Kumar explained that reducing Bengal’s voting to just 2 phases (from previous multi-phase elections) was a deliberate decision, calling it “necessary” to reduce election fatigue and security burden. BJP leader Shishir Bajoria has already filed a complaint alleging misuse of CAPF forces by Kolkata Police ahead of polls. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee announced a hike in the honorarium for Priests and Muezzins on the same day as the election announcement — raising eyebrows from the ECI on potential MCC violations.
