If you’ve ever tried to sleep on a long economy flight — improvising a pillow from a rolled-up sweater, fighting the person beside you for the armrest — a game-changing new seat design has arrived that could make budget air travel genuinely restful. Meet the Interspace seat by Universal Movement — and its bold rival, the Chaise Longue double-decker seat — two economy innovations that are rewriting the rules of affordable flying.

✈️ The Problem With Economy Seats Right Now

😣 99% of economy seats have barely changed since the 1970s
😣 Fixed upright seats force unnatural postures for hours
😣 70% of flyers would trade in-flight meals for a flat-sleep option
😣 Neck and back pain after long flights is near-universal
😣 Business class sleep upgrades cost 3–5x more than economy

🪑 Design 1: Interspace — The “Winged” Economy Seat

The Interspace concept from Universal Movement — a spinoff of London-based design company New Territory — features padded wings that fold out from both sides of the seat back. The wings give passengers a cushioned surface to rest their heads while sleeping upright, also providing added privacy from the passenger beside them. Crucially, the designer eliminated the headrest entirely — pointing out that chairs at home or in the office don’t have them either.

✅ What’s Great

✔ Padded wings fold in/out — your choice
✔ Extra privacy from neighbour
✔ Eliminates awkward headrest
✔ Could fit onto existing seats
✔ Lightweight carbon fibre design
✔ Facial recognition tech planned

⚠ Concerns

✗ Wings could feel chaotic in full cabin
✗ Airlines may charge extra for it
✗ Not yet adopted by any airline
✗ Still a concept — not in production
✗ May not suit window-seat sleepers
✗ Privacy limited vs business class

🛏️ Design 2: Chaise Longue — The Double-Decker Economy Seat

The more radical Chaise Longue concept by designer Alejandro Núñez Vicente involves a bold two-level stacked layout: one passenger sits in a raised upper seat, while another stretches out in a lower, more reclined position beneath them. By removing the overhead locker row, Núñez Vicente creates enough vertical space for two seat levels — giving both passengers more legroom than standard economy.

“Most airline seats haven’t changed since the 1970s. 99% of all Economy Class seats are fixed upright and impossible to sleep in. They force unnatural postures over long periods and can damage health.” — Zephyr Aerospace
