Police have arrested dozens of protesters and enforced strict curfew-like restrictions across several districts in India’s northeastern region and Jammu & Kashmir following widespread demonstrations triggered by the Iran-US conflict and local political tensions. Internet services have been suspended, roads barricaded, and heavy paramilitary deployment is in force across affected areas.
🚨 Curfew Alert — Active Regions
🔴 Jammu & Kashmir: Curfew in Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla — 3rd consecutive day
🔴 Leh, Ladakh: Section 144 in force, internet throttled to 2G
🔴 Manipur: Indefinite curfew in Imphal districts, mobile data suspended
🟡 Assam: Heavy CRPF deployment in Guwahati & Dibrugarh
🟡 Meghalaya/Nagaland: Prohibitory orders in sensitive areas
Jammu & Kashmir — 3 Days of Unrest
Authorities in Jammu & Kashmir have maintained stringent restrictions for a third consecutive day across several districts following protests triggered by news of the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei in US-Israeli airstrikes. Shia-majority areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and parts of south Kashmir have been the most affected. Educational institutions have been shut, mobile internet throttled to 2G speeds, and major roads sealed with concertina wire and checkpoints.
Police have also filed an FIR against National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly spreading “misleading” content on social media. Mehdi, who represents Srinagar in the Lok Sabha, claims his security cover has been downgraded amid the unrest — a claim he calls politically motivated.
Manipur — Discovery of 6 Bodies Sparks Violence
In Manipur, protests erupted after the discovery of six bodies believed to be members of the Meitei community who had been kidnapped. Protesters ransacked and set fire to the homes of lawmakers and ministers in Imphal. Police arrested 23 people for the violence and imposed an indefinite curfew with internet suspension. The bodies of a woman and a two-year-old child were later recovered from a river — shocking the nation. Since May 2023, ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities have killed at least 250 people and displaced 60,000 in the region.
“Northeast India is simultaneously dealing with the spillover of the Iran war protests in J&K, the unresolved Manipur ethnic crisis, the Ladakh statehood movement, and pre-election tensions in Assam — making March 2026 one of the most volatile months for India’s border regions in years.”
